What is River Walk?

It’s a top-quality Cullowhee, NC apartment community designed especially with Western Carolina University students in mind. River Walk features a variety of spacious, furnished apartments plus a full set of community features such as a 24-hour fitness center, sand volleyball court, community clubhouse, business center, dog park and more.

Is River Walk part of Western Carolina University?

River Walk is a privately owned and professionally managed community. Click here for more information about the management and ownership.

Can I live with friends, or can you match me with roommates?

You can select your roommate(s), or you can apply on your own and we can match you with other students. Applicants answer a short list of lifestyle questions to help in the matching process.

What are per-person contracts?

Instead of requiring all roommates to sign a joint lease, each person at River Walk has their own individual contract, with one person per bedroom. This means you are only responsible for paying for yourself — not your roommates. Even if a roommate moves out or other bedrooms in your apartment are empty, you only pay the rate for your bedroom.

What is included in the rate?

Each resident at River Walk pays a flat rate that includes:

  • Furnishings
  • In-unit laundry
  • High-speed internet
  • Water/sewer
  • Valet trash (fee required)
  • Community features – fitness center, business center, etc.

What size are the apartments?

The spacious accommodations at River Walk are available in 2 and 3 bedroom floorplans, with a private bedroom-bathroom suite for each resident.

Are the apartments furnished?

Yes, all apartments at River Walk have a furniture package that includes a full-size bed, desk and chair, and stackable dresser drawers in each bedroom. The living area includes a sofa, chair, coffee table and entertainment stand, as well as a dining table and barstools. When do the contracts start and end?

The standard term is August 15, 2024 to July 23, 2025, with payments made in 12 equal installments. Limited alternate dates are available; please inquire with our staff. Click here for a sample agreement.

Is a co-signer or financial guaranty required?

Within 7 days after a Housing Agreement is signed, each resident is required to do one of two things: provide a qualifying guarantor (often a parent), or pre-pay the final 2 installments.

Can I pay by credit card?

Yes. Residents can pay online 24 hours per day, by credit card or ACH electronic checking. River Walk also offers automatic payment by either credit card or checking account — just fill out one page, one time and payments will be made automatically. Convenience fees apply for credit card and debit card payments.

Will my financial aid cover charges at River Walk?

Your living costs at River Walk can be covered by financial aid, just like on-campus housing. Any available financial aid funds, after university charges are satisfied, are released to the student for non-institutional expenses, such as off-campus housing. These funds can be used to pay charges at River Walk. Normal payment deadlines will continue to apply.

Is River Walk open to non-students?

Nearly all the residents at River Walk are students at Western Carolina University and the per-person contracts are also designed with students in mind. Residents/families with children are welcome. There is no extra cost for minor children in the care of adult residents, other than regular charges for each bedroom space selected by the resident. A minor occupying a bedroom space rented by a parent, guardian or person with legal custody is not considered a breach of the Housing Agreement or a violation of the rules. River Walk is an Equal Opportunity housing provider and welcomes applications from non-students. In order to match student roommates in shared apartments, we will request roommate consent for any non-student occupants.

What kind of safety and security are provided?

River Walk has a monitored fire-sprinkler system, along with electronic locks plus individually locking bedroom doors. community courtesy patrols are provided at select times. Management staff are also available 24×7 and can be reached by a 24-hour phone number.

What are the policies on pets, smoking and guests?

River Walk is a pet-friendly community, subject to limits on animals and breeds. The community is smoke-free in all indoor and adjacent spaces. Guests are welcome at all times, subject to the consent of roommates and security considerations. Overnight guests are welcome, with limits on the number of days and guests.

Can I park my vehicle at River Walk?

River Walk offers free parking for residents and limited parking for visitors.

What other transportation options will I have?

River Walk is conveniently located less than one mile from Western Carolina University, making it easy to walk, bike or drive to class and other activities. There is also a shuttle bus that runs Monday – Friday: 7:30am to 5:00pm (last round leaves at 4:30pm). Routes take approximately 30 minutes and will pick up at the entrance of the property.
